History

"History is who we are and why we are the way we are."  – David McCullough

History inspires pupils to be curious about the past and to explore how it shapes the world around them. It provides a rich and meaningful context for understanding wider learning across subjects and society. Through history, students learn to ask thoughtful questions, think critically, evaluate evidence, and develop informed perspectives and sound judgement.

Studying history helps pupils grasp the complexity of human experiences—how people lived, how societies changed, and how different groups interacted over time. It reveals the diversity of cultures and ideas, and encourages empathy and understanding. Most importantly, it helps young people discover their own identity within a broader social, political, cultural, and economic landscape.

What makes history exciting is its power to connect us with real stories, challenge our thinking, and uncover hidden truths. It’s a subject of debate, discovery, and relevance—where the past is never truly past, and every lesson learnt can shape a better future.

Our History curriculum is enriched by the opportunity for Year 9 students to visit WWI Battlefields Trip to Ypres, Belgium.

Equipment

GCSE students are loaned a History Revision Book to use for homework and support independent revision. This must be returned to the History Department after their GCSEs.
