Science
Science in Warneford is designed to encourage enthusiastic curiosity in our students. Our curriculum builds on the knowledge and skills students have learnt in primary school, deepening their knowledge and understanding of key scientific ideas. In each topic, lessons are designed to develop skills in conducting experiments, as well as provide opportunities for them to develop their scientific communication skills through extended reading and writing.
We are proud that the journey for most of our students starts when they are in Year 4 at primary school, with visits, projects and practical skills built into our programme of primary outreach work.
During Year 7 and 8 the work is topic based, with students completing two topics in Biology, two topics in Chemistry and two topics in Physics each year, based on the KS3 National Curriculum for science.
Year 9 is a transition year where students study scientific ideas that are found in both the KS3 National Curriculum and the KS4 CGSE Science syllabus.
In Year 10 and Year 11, students will study either GCSE Combined Science or Triple Science, leading to two or three GCSE's in science when they leave Warneford. Throughout year 10 and Year 11 we will monitor student progress and move them to a more suitable pathway if necessary.
Students who sit the exams for Combined Science, or Triple Science, have the opportunity to study Science beyond Warneford, with all our local colleges and 6th forms accepting students onto science pathways if they achieve two or more grade 6’s in their science GCSE’s.
Beyond the classroom, pupils have the opportunities to experience science through a wide range of trips, visits and visiting speakers. These include:
· Trip to the Science Museum London
· Visit to the Oxford University Lectures
· Visit to the Natural History Museum in London
· Participating in the local STEM competitions
· Trip to the Aerospace Museum in Bristol
· Trip to Bristol Zoo
