PE

At Highworth Warneford School, our Physical Education department is committed to fostering a lifelong love of movement, health, and personal growth. We strive to create an inclusive, dynamic environment where every student is encouraged to challenge themselves, act with integrity, and pursue excellence—both on and off the field.

Through a diverse and engaging curriculum, we aim to:

  • Develop physical competence and confidence across a range of activities

  • Promote teamwork, leadership, and resilience through sport and fitness

  • Instil values of fair play, respect, and personal responsibility

  • Encourage healthy lifestyles and positive mental wellbeing

  • Inspire students to embrace challenge and celebrate their achievements

We believe that PE is not just about physical ability—it’s about building character, nurturing ambition, and empowering students to be their best selves.

Enrichment activities

We offer a wide range of lunchtime clubs and afterschool clubs, alongside lots of opportunities for competitions within school and against other schools in a variety of activities.

Each term brings a new opportunity for activities and competitions and the clubs we offer change regularly to suit the needs of our pupils and the competitions in the local area.

At present we offer, netball, football, basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, T1 rugby, badminton. We also offer activities such as cheerleading, trampolining, rounders, softball, athletics, cricket and tennis. Our pupil voice allows pupils to choose clubs and to see if they are viable.

House matches happen three times per year and include activities such as netball, basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, rounders, cricket and football. In every house match each house enter a team per year group and compete in their sports. The results go into the overall points for the house cup at the end of the academic year.

The Pe department organise a traditional sports day in the summer term, where we all join together and compete in our athletics events to gain points for our houses. It is always exciting to see who wins the Sports day trophy each year!

We also organise a year 7 swimming gala which takes place at Highworth Recreation Centre once a year.

Kit Requirements

Please see the whole school  uniform  page for our PE kit requirements.

All students in Years 7-9 should now be wearing the “new” style PE kit that was introduced several years ago but there was a grace period that has now expired.

White socks; Football boots; Trainers; Shin pads; Plain black jogging trousers. (No logos or contrasting colours); Gum-shield (optional) Black ‘skins’ may be worn under the PE Polo shirt in cold weather – Leggings are not acceptable

Long hair must be tied back in PE.

No earrings or other piercings will be allowed during PE lessons and will need to be removed, not just taped over.
There is no exception to this rule.

Pupils must be able to remove earrings for PE lessons. The safety of all pupils participating in PE and sports must be the school’s priority.

Students failing to take any unwanted adornment out will not be able to attend that lesson.

Uniform is only one part of ensuring that students are properly dressed for school. We also need them to follow some basic rules about the rest of their appearance.
